What does Reddit know? Leading AI developer OpenAI is going to find out. Reddit has partnered with the ChatGPT parent to provide its content as training fodder for the LLM. The deal will also see OpenAI become a Reddit advertising partner.

Sony opts out. Sony Music Group informed 700 AI developers and streaming services that it is withdrawing its content from AI training use. In a letter sent to these entities, Sony says it suspects unauthorized use of its content for training AI systems and warned any developers wanting to use its intellectual property to first obtain permission.

AI in your phone. A former Google employee posted that the company’s all-in embrace of AI is driven by “stone cold panic” that they will be left behind in the arms race to put a virtual assistant in every smartphone. Apple appears to feel the same way in its pursuit of an AI Siri.

Generationally Speaking

Giving Gen Z the feels. TV and streaming content affect Gen Z viewers’ emotions, engagement, and actionsmore than social media, according to a new report from the VAB and Hub Entertainment Research. Even YouTube suffers by comparison with Gen Z’ers 40% more likely to carve out time to enjoy premium video content versus content on YouTube.

Back to the 80s. For those looking to relive the 80s, production and distribution company, DLT Entertainment has launched a new FAST channel. Dubbed the “80s Sitcom Flashback,” the free, ad supported channel will launch initially on Plex and feature shows like Three’s Company, Too Close for Comfort and The Ropers.

Kid power. About 95% of parents of Generation Alpha kids are learning about products and brands from their children according to a recent survey. Nearly half of these parents say their kids exert influence on their purchase decisions and 90% of the Gen Alpha kids have some of their own money to spend as well.

Feeling pretty. Gen Z are spending big bucks on online beauty with recent data suggesting that about a third of the generation spent between $101 and $500 on online beauty products last year. Nearly a quarter report shopping once a week for beauty products.

Ever More Streaming

Big year for video on demand. According to new data from E-Marketer, leading subscription VOD platforms are projected to attract over 100 million viewers in the U.S. in 2024, with Netflix leading the way with over 179 million viewers. Netflix concluded the most recent fiscal period with 82.6 million paid subscribers in North America.

A little lower for the mountain top. Sony Pictures and Apollo Global Management were initially considering an all-cash $26 billion offer for Paramount Global, but now may be rethinking their approach. The news sent Paramount’s shareprice lower while Sony’s rose. Sony and Apollo are reportedly exploring various new acquisition strategies.

Flipping the script. With a focus on unscripted programming for the Millennial audience, Insight TV has announced a new partnership with The Roku Channel. The FAST channel will be available to viewer in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the U.K.
