Taking it Private

Private label has public support. Private label CPG items gained ground on brand names last year. A recent report shows a surge of 11.3% in private label product sales last year. Store brands led the charge, accounting for 29% of the overall increase.

Montana joins private club. Montana’s legislature just passed a sweeping consumer data privacy bill. If signed by the governor, the law will boost requirements for opt-out mechanisms, childhood privacy protections and more. Montana will join seven other states that have recently addressed consumer privacy.

The price of privacy. A series of lawsuits against Facebook arising from their misuse of user data during the 2016 election year have now been settled to the tune of $725 million. A judge ordered that amount be set aside for users of the platform who might have been impacted. If everyone eligible files an approved claim, the price of privacy will work out to just under $3 per person.

Trying Something New

Netflix is LIVE? Netflix announced a live reunion for its hit show ‘Love is Blind’ hoping to break the internet with its drama. Instead, the internet broke Netflix. Viewers encountered technical difficulties during the premiere, resulting in a recorded viewing. With live viewing suspected to be a main keeping point for potential cord-cutters, Netflix’s failed attempt is bad news for the streaming platform.

MAXimize your content. Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled HBO’s new identity and logo – Max. The platform will bring together HBO’s dramas and Discovery’s inventory under one umbrella with the tagline “The One to Watch.” U.S. subscribers will be able to access the reinvented platform May 23 and have the option of ad-supported or ad-free subscriptions.

Back on Top?

Nielsen regains title. Nielsen has renewed grounds to claim the title as the gold-standard in audience-measurement as it regains accreditation for its National TV Ratings product with the Media Ratings Council. Comscore will be pleading its case before the MRC soon, while Nielsen also pursues accreditation for its Local TV and Nielsen One measurement solutions.

One more hurrah? In the race to influence consumer tastes, some brands are looking to content creators with a little more seasoning. Recent campaigns for major brands like Mountain Dew, Ilia beauty and Alaskan Airlines have evidenced a trend of bypassing Millennial and Gen Z personalities in favor of Boomer and Gen X influencers.

Sunny screen outlook? Theater box office receipts bounced back from recent doldrums pretty strongly in the first three months of 2023. An industry analyst is now projecting that 2023 gross revenues will reach $32 billion, a 10% bump from earlier predictions and a number that would represent about a 23% improvement on last year.
